Notebook, 1859-1869.

The collection consists of Neel's student notebook which later became his diary. The notebook contains notes from D.H. Hill's Mathematics class, an account of textbooks purchased by Neel, a list of his classmates and their class standings, a diary of his Civil War experience (1861-1865), a diary of his teaching at Cool Springs Academy (1866-1868), and a diary of his teaching at Bethel Academy (1869). The school diary portions include lists of students and expense accounts. The civil war diary refers to his experiences with the 49th Regiment.

Samuel Reece Neel was a member of the Davidson College class of 1863. He left college to join the Confederate Army. He served in Company C, 1st Regiment N.C. Infantry and Company F, 49th Regiment N.C. Troops After the Civil War he taught in Croft, N.C., and was a merchant in Davidson, N.C. From the description of Notebook, 1859-1869.
